Major League Baseball Notes 5/9/2012: Josh Hamilton Hits Four Home Runs

(Patrick Smith/REUTERS)

Josh Hamilton continued his magnificent start to 2012 by putting on a show in Baltimore last night.

Not that there isn’t anything to see in Baltimore these days (more on that to come) but what Hamilton did last night, hitting four home runs in a game, had only been done 15 times prior in Major League Baseball history and not once since 2003.  Continue reading “Major League Baseball Notes 5/9/2012: Josh Hamilton Hits Four Home Runs”

NBA Playoffs 2012: Atlanta Hawks May Need To Consider Another Blueprint

(Kevin C. Cox/Getty Images North America)

I’m a Georgia native, fan of the Braves, Falcons, Hawks, and Georgia Bulldogs. My allegiance to said teams will never change no matter where I am in the world.

That said, here’s my take on the Atlanta Hawks.  Continue reading “NBA Playoffs 2012: Atlanta Hawks May Need To Consider Another Blueprint”

Major League Baseball Notes 5/8/2012: Nothing “Old School” About Cole Hamels Drilling Of Bryce Harper

(Daniel Shirey/Getty Images)

I think Cole Hamels might want to leave the tough guy act at home for a while.

In receiving a five-game suspension he not only hurt his team, which is currently 1-3 against the Nationals and Mets in their last four games, but also his own reputation.  Continue reading “Major League Baseball Notes 5/8/2012: Nothing “Old School” About Cole Hamels Drilling Of Bryce Harper”

Junior Seau Death Is A Sad Reminder Of Violent Nature Of Football Beyond The Game

I remember as a sixth grader wearing his shoes.

I’m not talking about Michael Jordan, I’m talking about Junior Seau. I remember thinking, even as a kid growing up in Georgia and him making his name in the state of California, how fascinating an athlete he was. Atlanta Braves Show Much More Than Offense In Wild Win Over Phillies

They weren’t going to let it happen again.

The Atlanta Braves, losers of eight-consecutive games to the rival Phillies seemed to reach a tipping point last night. Down six and staring at the possibility of losing their ninth straight by way of shutout it seemed improbable that the Braves would be able to overcome such a deficit. Especially considering their chances were even worse with Roy Halladay on the mound and doing what he normally does (i.e., dominate).  Continue reading “Atlanta Braves Show Much More Than Offense In Wild Win Over Phillies”

Major League Baseball Notes 5/3/2012: Jered “Dream” Weaver Throws No-Hitter

Jered Weaver used to be known as “the reluctant one.” There was nothing reluctant about his gem Wednesday night as he threw a no-hitter against the Twins and further solidified his place atop the rotation.  Continue reading “Major League Baseball Notes 5/3/2012: Jered “Dream” Weaver Throws No-Hitter”

Major League Baseball Power Rankings Week 4 (4/30/2012)

Late edition of my weekly power rankings this weekend after a packed weekend. The Rangers, Nationals, Braves and Dodgers continue their recent stretches of great baseball, the Boston Red Sox have shown new life, and one team takes a nosedive. On to it!

  1. Texas Rangers (17-6)- Since his first start, Yu Darvish has given up three earned runs in 27.1 innings pitched; striking out 28 batters and lowering his season opening ERA from 7.94 to 2.18 to go along with a 4-0 start. NBA Playoffs 2012: Eastern Conference May Lack Intrigue After Derrick Rose Injury

It was an unfortunate turn of events that saw a city’s collective heart skip a beat. The reigning NBA MVP lay on the floor, with just over a minute left and his team up by 14 points over the eighth seeded Philadelphia 76ers.  Continue reading “NBA Playoffs 2012: Eastern Conference May Lack Intrigue After Derrick Rose Injury”

Atlanta Braves Employing A New (Old) Key To Success

Throughout the 90’s and into the 2000’s the Atlanta Braves perched atop the National League East (and the old National West) was as common as the sequence of months on the calendar.

An organization known primarily for pitching, they are displaying something not recently seen in a Braves team and it is as important a part of their recent surge atop the division in 2012 as anything else discussed. Continue reading “Atlanta Braves Employing A New (Old) Key To Success”

Major League Baseball Notes 4/25/2012: Yankees Get Bad News On Michael Pineda

The big fish in the Yankees offseason trade with the Mariners will have to wait until at least 2013 to provide a return. Continue reading “Major League Baseball Notes 4/25/2012: Yankees Get Bad News On Michael Pineda”
