It was a special day in the Pacific Northwest for Philip Humber.
He threw the 21st perfect game in major league history against the Seattle Mariners striking out nine and becoming synonymous with such names as Catfish Hunter, Cy Young and Sandy Koufax. Unfortunately, there is the flip side of the name game when talking about the names on this list that includes Dallas Braden and Mike Witt.
A little history on Humber shows a man who has played for four organizations in his career and he’s only 29. He’s had problems with injuries and, to this point in his career, hasn’t won double-digit games in a season.
The first question when someone unexpected pulls this off is “where did this come from?” That’s the beauty of baseball. It doesn’t matter where it comes from because there is always that possibility it can happen.
Whats next? Well he’s scheduled to face the Red Sox on Thursday and with the way their season is going so far I wouldn’t be surprised if he has a Johnny Van de Meer experience and does it all over again in Chicago.
